Acne scarring is not the same as post-acne pigmentation. Pigment is a stain; scarring is a change in the architecture of the skin. When deep inflammation damages collagen, the skin may repair with too little support, leaving a dent, or with uneven fibrous tissue, leaving tethered texture. This is why a brightening serum cannot fill an icepick scar. It is simply not that job. The common scar types are icepick scars, which look narrow and deep; boxcar scars, which have sharper edges; and rolling scars, which look like soft waves or uneven depressions. Many people have a mix. PIH can sit on top of scars, making them look darker and more obvious, but fading the colour will not fully change the depth. Topicals can support collagen quality and prevent new acne, but meaningful pitting usually needs procedures: microneedling, laser, subcision, TCA CROSS for select icepick scars, or combination plans. Medium, pigment-prone skin needs a conservative approach because the wrong intensity can trade texture for pigmentation. Nobody ordered that.
