Primary Trigger

Cumulative UV exposure

Severity Level

Mild to severe, depending on cumulative exposure and whether texture or precancerous changes are present.

Healing Timeline

Persistent unless actively managed

20-Second Answer

The 3 established, editor-vetted options for this concern:

Ingredient

Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid)

A proven antioxidant that is formulation-sensitive.

Ingredient

Zinc Oxide / Mineral SPF

The non-negotiable pigment and aging step. For melasma or pigment-prone skin, look for a tinted, iron-oxide mineral formula specifically - plain (white-cast) mineral SPF blocks UV but not visible light, which is a separate, documented melasma trigger.

Treatment

BBL / BroadBand Light

Useful, but skincare keeps the result.

Sun damage is not one single thing. It is a collection of changes caused by repeated UV exposure: pigment spots, uneven tone, rougher texture, broken-looking redness, and collagen breakdown. UVA is the quiet one that passes through windows and contributes to deeper photoaging. UVB is more associated with burning. Both are annoying, and neither asks permission. Dark spots from sun exposure are different from PIH because they do not need a breakout or injury to start. They build slowly from repeated light exposure and often appear in high-exposure areas like cheeks, forehead, nose, shoulders, chest, and hands. In medium, pigment-prone skin, the marks can look more stubborn and uneven even without obvious sunburn history. The practical point is simple: sun damage is easier to slow down than reverse. Retinoids, antioxidants, pigment regulators, and some clinic treatments may improve the look of uneven tone, but SPF is the base layer. Without it, every brightening serum is basically mopping the floor while the tap is still running.

Find Your Cause

Not every cause is treated the same way — find the one that matches you.

Cumulative UVA exposure

UVA penetrates more deeply and contributes to collagen breakdown and long-term uneven tone.

UVB exposure

UVB drives sunburn and surface pigment response, which can leave longer-lasting discolouration.

Inadequate sunscreen amount

Using too little product gives less protection than the label suggests.

Outdoor heat and reflection

Heat, sand, water, and bright surfaces can increase exposure and pigment response.

Past tanning habits

Repeated tanning can show up years later as uneven pigment and texture."
